Why Personalized Learning

Unique Key Components

The key components that, when utilized together, distinguish our approach as a unique educational model within the California public school system are as follows:

  • We follow a university-type model with a "hybrid' or "multi-strand" approach. Our school provides a wide variety of curriculum choices, attention to individual learning styles, technology learning access, and a variety of learning environments and opportunities both within and beyond the classroom so that learning programs may be tailored according to the individual needs and preferences of each student.
  • Parents are strongly encouraged and supported to be actively involved in their children’s education and to take personal responsibility for ensuring that their children are learning successfully.
  • We support and facilitate learning program development and oversight through an ongoing collaborative relationship between parents, students, teachers, the school, the greater community, and the state.
  • We are committed to reduced class sizes, generally limiting attendance to no more than 15-20 students per class.
  • We combine multiple assessment levels of student academic achievement. Certificated teachers oversee student progress toward satisfying state academic standards through the regular recording of detailed learning records, compiling extensive student work portfolios, and conducting annual state mandated testing programs.
  • We devote the majority of the school budget for the instructional benefit of their students. This includes providing students with certificated teaching expertise and oversight, technology access, and a wide variety of learning choices and environments that students need to be successful academically.
  • We emphasize dynamic teaching staff development programs that help teachers learn how to tailor learning according to their student’s learning styles, needs, and aspirations.

How it works?

Parents, students and teachers team together for success. At the time of enrollment, a credentialed teacher works with the family to conduct a pre-enrollment interview and define Independent Study requirements along with the student's educational goals. Curriculum options are discussed, including computer-based or more traditional methods. Graduation requirements and college or vocational goals are reviewed. A plan is then established that integrates California State content standards with the desired methods and approaches to learning.

Resources are loaned to the student and must be returned at the end of each school year. CORE also has materials available in a library to augment the curriculum. Parents are provided with a budget to provide out side instruction from local community vendor course instructors (VCI.) A Vendor Course Instructor (VCI) is a person or facility that provides tutoring, music lessons, physical education facilities, etc. and has been approved by the school to provide services to its students. All VCI's have gone through the process of fingerprinting as required by the State of CA and have completed the essential paperwork to be a provider.

Approval of Vendor Course Instructors

Parents and teachers may choose to work with other tutors and course instructors if defined in the student’s unique plan. A process for approval must be followed/ instruction may not take place until approval from the school is received.

Following enrollment, the teacher will meet regularly to assign and evaluate student work, monitor attendance and document student progress toward course completion. Samples in each of the core subjects of student work are submitted to the charter school each assignment period.

Student work samples might include written work, video taped performances, photo journals, etc. Progress is also recorded by semester report cards. Reports cards are a mandatory form or assessment for all grade levels. Teachers are provided a variety of report card formats from which parents and teachers may choose the best assessment for their child/ren. Outcomes are also measured by the administration of state assessment tests, currently

State-certified diploma

Our Charter School is a California public school and a state-certified diploma will be issued upon completion of graduation requirements. College preparatory and general courses are available.

WASC Accreditation

CORE has been approved as a candidate for The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation.

Accountability

At CORE, students meet regularly with credentialed teachers to maintain the same standards, ethics and quality control as other schools in the traditional setting. Teachers, parents and the students meet a minimum of every 20 days but more frequent meetings may be agreed upon at the time of enrollment. Teachers, parents and students review and evaluate the student work and assign student work for the next assignment period. Parents and students may request to meet with their teachers on a weekly basis at any time during the school year.

Our charter school meets district and state standards for the operation of an independent study school model.
