Fall 2007-2008 School Year

K-2 Literature Around the World
Students will experience the joys of good books as they listen to wonderful stories and participate in hands-on and interactive projects, games, and much more. Students will need to be in a regular language arts curriculum in addition to this weekly enrichment class.

3rd-5th Foods Around the World
Students will experience the joys of good food as they participate in the preparation and planning of foods from around the world.
Instructor: Ashley Reimer

3rd-5th Book Club
Students will read and discuss literature, including learning about the main parts of literature. Students will need to be in a regular language arts curriculum in addition to this weekly enrichment class.

K-2 Music
This is a beginning music class that covers the basics of rhythm, singing, movement, and notation with the possibility of playing simple instruments and recorders. The curriculum will come from the Kodaly and Orff-Schulwerk methodologies.

K-5 Art
This weekly hands on art class will allow students to work in a variety of media, learning the elements of art, and applying their knowledge to produce original works.

K-5 Spanish
Students will learn elements of Spanish Language though fun, interactive stories and exercises. They will be able to understand and speak various stories and conversation in Spanish. They will use the interactive computer program Power-Glide.

5th Science
Students will participate once a week in labs emphasizing some of the 5th grade standards. Students will need to use adopted curriculum and follow a regular course of study in addition to this lab.

2nd-5th Computer Applications
Students will use TechKnowledge to learn and apply fundamental computer skills. This program covers a various of computer applications including Computer Basics, Keyboarding, Word Processing, Drawing & Graphics, Gadgets, Presentations, Spreadsheets, Database, Electronic Reference and the Internet.

3rd-5th Performing Arts
Students will explore the performing arts including: music, dance, and drama. Students will perform using these skills in a variety of performances.

Junior High English
Grades 6-8
This course will include grammar, reading, writing, and responding to literature. Students will complete research, which they will put into a Power Point and a formal APA research paper. They will write poetry, give an oral presentation, and much more. In addition to reading a number of short stories, students will complete an in depth study of The Giver. Class meets Wednesdays from 9-11, and requires approximately 5 hours of work completed at home. No additional work in the area of language arts is necessary unless a student needs work in the area of spelling.

6th Science

6th-8th Cultural Geography Through Art
This Junior High course will cover various art forms from around the world.

6th-8th Intro to Spanish
Students will learn conversational and some elements of grammar as they study Spanish through the Powerglide online program.

7th Science Lab
This fun and educational weekly hour lab will cover some of the 7th grade science standards. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the science curriculum in order to fulfill the requirements of the 7th grade standards.

7th-12th Computer Animation – Video Game Design
This course teaches students the basics of video game design as they follow the online tutorial step by step in creating Basic video and Platform video games. The 2nd semester teaches students the basics of animation as they use character templates to create video game characters that are then imported into their video games.

7th-8th 2nd Step
Students will meet once a week to learn cooperative strategies for getting along with others and resolving conflicts.

8th Science Lab

7th-11th Pre Algebra
5 units High School Students
Students will prepare for the rigors of Algebra 1. Saxon Algebra 1⁄2 text will be provided in class.

5 Units
This two-hour class meets weekly to help students discover career paths and college preparation.

High School Home Economics
1-5 units by arrangement
This class meets weekly for one hour to learn basic sewing techniques, gradually working up to more complex projects. Students will earn one credit per semester for in-class work. Additional Home Economics units may be earned through arrangement with the Personalized Learning Teacher.

High School Spanish 1
5 units
Students meet with an instructor twice weekly to converse in Spanish and study the Powerglide Spanish 1 curriculum. Students keep a study notebook, do homework weekly and take exams.

Students meet once weekly in a two-hour block to converse in Spanish and study the Powerglide Spanish 2 curriculum. Students keep a study notebook, do home work weekly and take exams.

High School Algebra 1
5 units
Students will attend class twice weekly, and will complete additional work at home in order to cover the full year curriculum. The ALEKS online computer curriculum will provide the basis for the course.

High School Earth Science Lab
This fun and educational weekly hour and 1⁄2 lab constitutes one unit toward high school earth science. Textbooks and lab manuals will be provided in class. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the earth science curriculum in order to complete the requirements of high school earth science.

High School Biology Lab
This fun and educational weekly hour and 1⁄2 lab constitutes one unit toward high school biological science. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the biology curriculum in order to complete the requirements of high school biology.

High School English
5 units
Students will read, analyze, and respond to literature including The Adventures of Ulysses, Antigone, Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Romeo and Juliet, Flowers for Algernon, and Animal Farm. They will write essays, create poetry, write a short story, and much more. This class is interactive, meets Thursdays from 9-11, and requires approximately 5 hours of work completed at home.

Expository Reading and Writing Course
5 Units
Recommended especially for students grades 11 and 12
This course was specifically designed by the CSU system to prepare high school students for college. Students will derive great benefit from reading, analyzing and writing about non-fiction, as a well as fictional text excerpts, and a text of their own choice. Reading selected for this course has been chosen on criteria of similarity to reading students will encounter in post-graduation years, vis-á vis, contemporary issues. The course hopes to bridge in-school and out-of-school literacy. The course will give students the tools to annotate, refer to other writings, recognize bias, and form personal opinions. It will include vocabulary study, pre and post reading activities, reading and writing. The goal is to assist students to become critical, smart readers as they become efficient, well-organized, and interesting writers.

High School Journalism/Yearbook
2.5 credits/semester
High School students, junior high with instructor permission.
Students will learn the elements and processes of magazine-type layout and design to produce the CORE yearbook. We will have time constraints and work within a budget. We will select the theme, create layout designs, learn basics of journalism and photography, write and edit headlines, copy and captions, and participate in advertising through ad sales and book sales.

Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
5 credits/semester
Students will meet once a week to cover the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Strategies for life-long success will be covered. Homework and projects will be required to complete 5 units of credit.
