Are you ready for a little fun? If you're in Kindergarten or First Grade, please join us for some fun! We will be doing calendar, patterning, math concepts, singing, playing instruments, writing, reading, art, and working on the alphabetic principle. Students will be working on beginning reading, writing, and math skills and will also be exposed to science and social studies concepts. Student must be completing the regular curriculum in each core subject in addition to this enrichment class. Parents are welcome to participate if they would like to.
4-5th Grade Math Foundations

Students will learn/review and perfect basic math skills in order to make sure they have a strong foundation entering into pre-algebra. A combination of instruction, practice, and activities will be used in the class. This class will not fulfill the requirements for math but will be an adjunct to the students’ regular math. Skills that will be reviewed include: math facts, fractions, decimals, percents, measurement, geometric calculations, and others. All students will be given an assessment at the beginning of the class in order to see what needs there may be as a class.

This class provides unique educational opportunities for high-achieving motivated students. The class will have an intense rigorous pace, focusing on in-depth unit studies. Students will analyze, use advanced ideas, respond creatively, and develop self-generating problem-solving abilities. High achievement and leadership skills will be explored. Expectations for students will include: personal motivation for academics, a commitment for follow through, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to explore the academic world, including a conversational Spanish component. Parents will be required to volunteer and provide support for classroom activities, at home, and on field trips. Homework will be assigned. The unit studies are in addition to regular at-home curriculum. Teacher recommendation is required.

This class is designed to stimulate a joy in reading, analyzing, and responding to literature. Students will participate in discussions about assigned readings. They will write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive essays using organization, research, drafting, editing, and revising. Titles are not yet confirmed but are likely to include The Giver trilogy: The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger. Students should expect about 3 hours of homework per week and will require additional spelling and grammar assignments to be given by their primary teacher.

Students will enjoy discovery experiences in history through role-play in costume, art and music, virtual technology, vocabulary games and other project based activities. This class will supplement student textbook work at home. This class will provide a perfect overview for 8th graders who will be taking the STAR history test covering these time periods. Seventh graders will understand the Middle Ages drawing from the influence of the Ancients and how The New World developed from historic foundations. The first semester will provide sixth grade students with a world wide tangible understanding of ancient civilizations (they may continue second semester if desired). The History of US middle school curriculum will be referenced but not required as assignments will not be given from any textbook. Occasionally projects will need to be completed at home or with extra "study groups" to be decided upon, for example, a Medieval Fair.

We will begin the class by over viewing the ancient cultures of the world. We will locate them, create maps, and reproduce some of the art/contributions from the earliest established civilizations. This portion of the class will compliment the 6th grade social studies curriculum very well. We will travel the world and students will learn about different cultures through video, pictures, and my personal art collection from around the world. We will have weekly projects that involve such mediums as drawing with paints and color pastels, mask-making, Indian block printing, and many other colorful and entertaining hands-on projects.

This course was specifically designed by the CSU system to prepare high school students for college. Students will derive great benefit from reading, analyzing and writing about non-fiction, as a well as fictional text excerpts, and a text of their own choice. Reading selected for this course has been chosen on criteria of similarity to reading students will encounter in post-graduation years, through studying contemporary issues. The course hopes to bridge in-school and out-of-school literacy. The course will give students the tools to annotate, refer to other writings, recognize bias, and form personal opinions. It will include vocabulary study, pre and post reading activities, reading and writing. The goal is to assist students to become critical, smart readers as they become efficient, well-organized, and interesting writers.

An historic viewpoint of Shakespeare will be presented. Students will learn the history of Shakespeare’s life, studying the times in which he lived, and his impact as a writer on Western Literature. This is a HS level introductory Spanish course. Students will use a combination of two curriculums. They will be given assignments from the Buen Viaje textbook that will give them a foundation in basic grammar. In addition, they will have nightly assignments in the online curriculum, Power-glide. Power-glide is an excellent component as it is interactive, allowing the student to listen to Spanish on a daily basis and participate in activities that will enhance their oral use of the language. By combining these two curriculums, they will learn both the basic grammatical structure of the language and understand the flow and pronunciation of the language that is often not taught in a conventional Spanish class.
Literature Based English

Literature Based English is designed for college preparation. Students will read selected texts from a variety of genre. Through directed reading and writing assignments, they will focus on the mechanics of language, punctuation, and vocabulary development. They will use critical analysis to evaluate patterns and make connections within literature, discuss and present ideas and observations, and write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive essays using organization, research, drafting, editing, and revising. This course is being submitted for A-G approval and so will be highly academic, requiring strong grade level reading and writing skills, or a sincere interest in working hard towards this skill development. Literature will include fairy tales and nursery rhymes, Midsummer Night's Dream, Black Like Me, Farewell to Manzanar, Our Town, Old Man and the Sea, Wuthering Heights, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Students will average 7 hours each week in assignments to be completed outside of class, and is a full English course requiring no additional assignments in the area of English.
Public Speaking
