K – 5th grades
Social Studies Activities with Art
K -3rd grades
Material fee $10.00 per year.
Students will address CA. state standards through fun thematic activities, stories, and art to include: Communities, Transportation, Holidays (including Cultural and Patriotic), Great Americans, and American Symbols and songs.

Fun with Story Time, Science and Art
K – 3rd grades
Material fee $10.00 per year.
Students will have the opportunity to hear fiction and non-fiction books related to science themes. Students will explore science through hands-on activities, and art. We will explore an entirely different set of science themes than last year, for students who are continuing in this class. In physical science will we investigate magnets, and the properties of water. In earth science we will learn about the earth’s core, rocks, earthquakes and volcanoes. We will also explore animal habitats: rainforest and the desert, as well as life cycles. Instructor: Sheryl Lee
Nutrition and Fun with Food
K – 3rd Grades

The class will focus on nutrition, sanitation and technique. We will accomplish this through 8 culinary thematic months. We will begin with Farm to Table and continue through to International, Holiday, Breakfast, Lunch, Salad, Dessert and Drinks. Respect for each other and the kitchen environment will be needed to participate. Parent helpers will be greatly appreciated!

Book Club
4th – 6th grades

An in-depth look at a variety of genres of literature including: fantasy, historical fiction, humor, mystery, adventure and more. Books will be read at home along with vocabulary and journal assignments. In-class work will consist of questions, summaries, analysis and related activities.

Nutrition and Fun with Food
4th – 6th Grades

Writer’s Workshop
4th – 7th Grades
The student will focus on developing thinking and organizational skills for essay writing, especially as needed for test-taking. There is an option, by arrangement with the parent or the PLT, for the student to work on other writing assignments.

5th Grade Science
Students will explore 5th grade California state standards through hands-on activities, following the sequence of the Harcourt 5th grade science textbook. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the 5th grade curriculum in order to complete the requirements. We will be reviewing the standards for the STAR test.

Introduction to Spanish
6th – 8th Grades

This class is designed for students with little or no previous Spanish experience. It is a beginning class with an emphasis on communication. Students will engage in a variety of activities, including the total physical response method to create a relaxed and fun environment. There will also be some cultural discussions and celebrations as well. The only requirement for this class is a positive attitude and a willingness to try new things.

Second Step
Students will learn to understand themselves and others. The course covers empathy, communication, control of emotions, problem solving, goal setting, decision making and the acquisition of highly effective habits. Curriculum for the class includes the nationally acclaimed Second Step curriculum, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey, excerpts from Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg and a book chosen from the list of ‘50 great books for teens’ each semester. Additionally, the students will participate in at least one community service project in which they will practice a new skill or habit they are learning.

7th Grade Life Science Lab
This fun and educational weekly hour lab will cover some of the 7th grade science standards. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the science curriculum in order to fulfill the requirements of the 7th grade standards.

Paradise Center Class Descriptions for 2007 - 2008 Classes
High School
Algebra 1
5 credits
Students will learn Algebra through ALEKS, an online math program. Students will attend class twice weekly for instruction combined with individual assistance by the teacher. Approximately 5 hours of internet based homework per week is required outside of class time to complete the course. Successful completion of Pre Algebra is a prerequisite for this course.

Spanish 1
5 credits
Students meet twice weekly to converse in Spanish and use the online program PowerGlide. Students keep a study notebook, do homework weekly and take exams. Students in Spanish 1 develop knowledge and skills to begin communicating in the target language. They speak, listen, read and write the language in short sentences and paragraphs that contain the learned vocabulary words and phrases. Students also gain insight into the target culture by examining literature, music, laws, foods, values, traditions, and behaviors.

Earth Science Lab
This fun and educational weekly hour and ½ lab constitutes one credit toward high school earth science. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the earth science curriculum in order to complete the requirements of high school earth science.

This fun and educational weekly hour and ½ lab constitutes one credit toward high school biological science. Students need to be simultaneously completing assignments from the biology curriculum in order to complete the requirements of high school biology.

High School and Beyond
5 credits
In this course, high school student will zero in on their favorite skills and apply that knowledge to get the most out of a school, set goals, and find their dream jobs. The course will be based on the book WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE? For Teens. In addition to the text, students will search web sites on careers, colleges, interests and more. Community members will be invited to speak about their chosen careers. The focus of the course will be for the students' to begin defining themselves and start planning for their future.

English Response to Literature
5 credits
This class is designed for high school students to explore famous works by literary greats. Students will sample works from all over the world and in many different genres. There will be interactive group discussions and analysis of each work. Comprehensive questions and literary responses will be a part of the work assigned. Students will be encouraged to relate their life experiences to situations found in the novels selected.
